چکیده

Redistribution of air masses due to atmospheric circulation causes loading deformation of the Earth’s crust which can be as large as 20 mm for the vertical component and 3 mm for horizontal components. Rigorous computation of site displacements caused by pressure loading requires knowledge of the surface pressure field over the entire Earth surface. A procedure for computing 3-D displacements of geodetic sites of interest using a 6-hourly pressure field from the NCEP numerical weather models and the Ponte and Ray [2002] model of atmospheric tides is presented. We investigated possible error sources and found that the errors of our pressure loading time series are below the 15% level. We validated our model by estimating the admittance factors of the pressure loading time series using a dataset of 3.5 million VLBI observations from 1980 to 2002. The admittance factors averaged over all sites are 0.95 ± 0.02 for the vertical displacement and 1.00 ± 0.07 for the horizontal displacements. For the first time horizontal displacements caused by atmospheric pressure loading have been detected. The closeness of these admittance factors to unity allows us to conclude that on average our model quantitatively agrees with the observations within the error budget of the model. At the same time we found that the model is not accurate for several stations which are near a coast or in mountain regions. We conclude that our model is suitable for routine data reduction of space geodesy observations. D R A F T February 2, 2008, 3:39am D R A F T PETROV AND BOY: ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE LOADING X 3

Atmospheric pressure loading for routine data analysis

We have computed 3-D displacements induced by atmospheric pressure loading from 6-hourly surface pressure field from NCEP (National Center for Environmental Predictions) Reanalysis data for all Very Long Baseline Interferometry) and SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging) stations. We have quantitatively estimated the error budget our time series of pressure loading and found that the errors are below 15...

Guy Bomford Prize Lecture 2011 Atmospheric Effects in Space Geodesy

The atmosphere is surrounding the solid Earth and the oceans, and with its variations at time scales from seconds to decades it opens up a wide field of challenging and fascinating tasks in space geodesy. The investigation of these atmospheric effects and the analysis of geodetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations have dominated my research in the past decade. Geodetic VLBI w...

Crustal Deformation due to Atmospheric Pressure Loading in New Zealand

We investigate atmospheric pressure loading displacements in New Zealand using global and regional air-pressure data collected over a period of 50 years (1960-2009). The elastic response of the Earth to atmospheric loading is calculated by adopting mass loading Love numbers based on the parameters of the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM). The ocean response to atmospheric loading is comp...

Evaluation of Geometric and Atmospheric Doppler for GNSS-RO Payloads

To reduce the sampling rate in global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-radio occultation receivers, it is essential to establish a suitable estimation of Doppler frequency from the received signal in the satellite onboard receiver. This receiver is usually located on low earth orbit satellite and receives GNSS satellites signal in the occultation situation. The occurred Doppler on the signal ...

Atmospheric pressure loading corrections applied to GPS data at the observation level

[1] Space-geodetic techniques can detect elastic deformation of the Earth caused by atmospheric pressure loading (ATML). However, it has not yet been demonstrated whether these surface displacements should be accounted for at the time of reduction of the observations or by applying time-averaged values to the coordinates after the analysis of the observations. An analysis of the power spectral ...
